CrossFitter of the Month: Kayla Brzon

I think I can speak for all the coaches when I say that we all knew Kayla would do amazing things in CrossFit — we just had to wait for her to find her niche.

Kayla first appeared in Ladies Night class one night last winter. She was really quiet, definitely shy. She put up our goofball antics and went with the flow on our weird programming, and surprised us by returning week after week. She would ask what weight to do, and then complete each WOD succinctly as prescribed. Then one day, she started choosing her own weight for the bar. Then on one of our max nights, she worked up to an impressive 135 lbs on the bar and hang cleaned it like she’d done it a million times. Then she jerked 155 lbs — every movement completed with the most surprised look on her face, as if she was inhabiting someone else’s body and not the one she’d always known.

This weekend she is competing in her first powerlifting competition, in a singlet no less. The evolution we’ve seen in her, coupled with her raw ability to move heavy weight and always want to add more, is why we are awarding Kayla Brzon CrossFitter of the Month!

How long have you been attending CrossFit Fringe, and what brought you here?

I have been attending CrossFit since the end of November 2013. I became interested in Crossfit after watching the 2012 Crossfit Games and thinking “I want to do that!” I tried CrossFit at another box and I didn’t like the environment so I came to Crossfit Fringe and fell in love.

Since starting at CrossFit Fringe, what has changed about your lifestyle or outlook on life?

I find that I have more confidence, both in life and at the box. I have also re-evaluated my diet. I am 5 months clean from diet soda and have drastically reduced the amount of processed and prepackaged food I eat.

What is your favorite movement/skill?

Lifting anything heavy. Especially back squats.

What has been the most challenging part of your journey with CrossFit?

Burpees. Just kidding.
It was hard at first when I didn’t see the number on the scale going down. However, I am slowly beginning to realize that health and fitness are not measured by a scale, and I am finding other ways to monitor my progress.

What do you enjoy most about CrossFit/CrossFit Fringe?

I enjoy the people. I feel that the coaches and athletes are genuinely interested in how you are doing both in and out out the box. There is truly a family atmosphere at Fringe.

What do you like to do outside the gym?

I enjoy baking, listening to audiobooks, crafts as well as DIY projects. I also enjoy the occasional Disney movie.
