Our Coaches

Nate Bacott

General Manager, CrossFit Level 2 Trainer

“What I love most about my work is helping so many people coming from diverse pathways of fitness. Everyone from professional CrossFit to weightlifting, GRID, powerlifting, military preparation, and rugby athletes to individuals in rehabilitation. I’ve gotten to share victories with expectant and postpartum moms, and athletes with lower and upper extremity post-injury rehabilitation. I’ve helped athletes discover and return to sport. The thrill of my career is the diversity of athletes and infinite differences in goals, progressions, programs, and habit formations I can create to serve them.” Nate Bacott actually took over operations/ownership of CrossFit United (Columbia Missouri’s 1st CrossFit Affiliate) in 2011 during his Senior year of college. Over the next 2 years, CrossFit United would grow as would Nate’s friendship with Tyler Lasley. CrossFit United reorganized and rebranded as CrossFit Fringe in 2013. The Fringe community continued to grow, and a professional development opportunity took Nate to Denver in 2015. During his time in Colorado, Nate was Manager & Head Coach at 2 different fitness facilities where he was responsible for the growth of their community and refining of their programs. In addition, he worked very closely with CrossOver Symmetry, a shoulder and hip rehabilitation equipment company, and Cascade Sports Physical Therapy. As an athlete, he was able to qualify for the 2015 American Open Weightlifting Finals and in 2018 was on Team Alpine at the CrossFit South Regional. In 2019, wanting to be closer to family and friends, he relocated back to Missouri. Lucky for him we like him and his skills, and he is now our General Manager as well as head of our Specialty Programs. Sam Noordsy

Coach, CrossFit Level 2 Trainer

Sam started her CrossFit journey like many, as an athlete who attended a free class at another gym in 2013. After an early fitness career that included basketball in high school, she was missing the challenge and thrill of competitive physical activity, and started attending group classes at her local sports club. Her love of physical activity carried into her academics as well as she pursued a degree in Child Development and Education at the University of Missouri. She was drawn to the Rec Center and a local globo-gym. Everything changed after that free CrossFit class. She obtained her CF-L1 in 2014 and began coaching later that year. When CrossFit Fringe expanded in 2016, Sam came aboard as the Manager and Head Trainer of the West location. Her endless questions, boundless energy, and desire to expand her knowledge are her hallmarks. She has incredible technique and a highly discerning eye for Olympic lifting. She enjoys passing on the empowerment and encouragement that made her fall in love with the sport onto every athlete she coaches.

Ian Day

Coach, Certified CrossFit Level 3 Trainer

Ian is a CrossFit Level 3 Trainer and was the Co-Head Coach of Alpine CrossFit with our very own Coach Nate in Colorado. Currently, Ian is the Lead Health and Wellness Advisor to Lightward.

When he isn’t working remotely with his tech team or remote athletes on his roster, you can likely find him shopping for socks, training hard, or eating copious amounts of food.

Matt Keel

Coach, CrossFit Level 2 Trainer

Matt, a Columbia native, has been active in CrossFit since 2009, obtaining his CF-L1 in 2013. He graduated from the University of Missouri with a Bachelor’s in Business Administration in 2006. As one of the original members from the first area CrossFit gym – the foundation from which CF Fringe formed – he realized he had a passion for helping and coaching others. Ever since he has been a staple at Fringe. Matt has a varied sports background, including baseball, weightlifting, tennis, and skateboarding. As a coach, he has great patience and willingness to watch and critique lifts and form. He has many staple cues and offers honest, yet constructive feedback in a way that is immediately useful and easy to comprehend for those of all skill levels. His long term plans include obtaining the CF-L2 and CF-L3, along with more specific focuses in Olympic Lifting, Gymnastics and Aerobic Capacity.

Erica Crane

Coach, CrossFit Level 2 Trainer

Erica is one of our longest-tenure members and one of the most accomplished. Having graduated with a Doctorate of Pharmacy (PharmD) from the University of Missouri, she is a highly respected Pharmacist who owns a local pharmacy (NetRx). She has served as President and active member of the Missouri Pharmacy Association and is an advocate for the important role pharmacists play in our ever-changing healthcare system. Erica exemplifies trying to make a difference through deep empathy and care for everyone she encounters.

As a coach, Erica excels at everyone feel welcome and comfortable, no matter where in her journey someone is starting. She is quick to lighten the mood, offer a joke or perspective, and easy ways to improve a lift or workout. Definitely seek her out as a partner in your next barbell workout.

Isaac Ellis

Isaac Ellis

Coach, CrossFit Level 2 Trainer

Isaac is our tallest coach, excels in reaching the highest bar, lifting heavy-ish, and other things tall people are good at in Crossfit. He loves coaching and being a part of our Fringe community as the team and family atmosphere drives him to be better every day.

Isaac developed a love of sport and coaching as a collegiate volleyball player and later as a coach at high school and club levels. In recent years, he has taken his knowledge of CrossFit and nutrition to the next level by starting a local farm, focused on clean and sustainable practices.

Isaac believes the food we put in our bodies is important and he wants to be a small part of the shift to healthier food options in Columbia, MO.

Colleen Hutcherson

CrossFit Kids Coach

Colleen brings her passion and experience to our team and community as one of our CrossFit Kids Coaches. You can find so much of her creativity and wisdom at play in programming, class flow, and our updated Kid’s board.

An art teacher with 5+ years of experience, Colleen first found CrossFit as a way to stay active after moving to a new area. This eventually led her to find Coach Jordan and follow him to Fringe.

We all love being in classes with Colleen because she is the ultimate partner in a partner WOD, bringing humor, focus, a great technical eye, and plenty of encouragement to everyone around her.

Ava Kitzi

CrossFit Kids Coach / Media

Ava is one of our original CrossFit Kids, starting with us as an athlete all the way back in 2013. She is an integral part of our program’s evolution and has grown with it, from athlete to intern, to now full-fledged coach.

Ava now attends the University of Missouri with a major in Journalism but is literally already working and doing all the things. Student by day, she is an intern with the Mizzou Athletic Department in photojournalism, writes and photographs for the popular online journal “Morning Chalk Up”, and of course, helps coach the Kids program.

Ava is not only an exceptional role model to all the athletes in our Kids’ program, but she also keeps all the adults on their toes as well.

Kathy Sharp

Kathy brings 30 years of teaching experience to the CrossFit Fringe staff. During her career, her focus was on meeting the needs of students with varied learning modalities. She also had the opportunity to collaborate with classroom teachers to develop effective strategies for teaching career and technical content to learners with a wide range of backgrounds and learning abilities. Since retirement, she has enjoyed having the opportunity to learn new skills in new areas, including the chance to work with the Vitality athletes and coaches. Her athletic background includes basketball and track in high school, and she has also dabbled in a variety of recreational sports over the years, including basketball, softball, volleyball, and racquetball. She has also logged a lot of running miles including 1 marathon, several 1/2 marathons, and multiple 5Ks and 10Ks until I began to be plagued by overuse injuries.

Kathy began CrossFit with us as an athlete back 2012 and began coaching in 2018 when we started our Vitality program. She has a Master’s in Education as well as has completed “The Art of Refined Coaching” certificate.

Libby Cowgill coach at CrossFit Fringe

Libby Cowgill

Coach, CrossFit Level 2 Trainer

Libby has enjoying picking up heavy objects and putting them down again for as long as she can remember, and loves that CrossFit forces her to do this faster than she ever dreamed possible. Her background is primarily in powerlifting, bodybuilding, and Tae Kwon Do, with a brief, albeit unfortunate stint in barefoot distance running. She is originally from Portland, Oregon, frequently breaks into spontaneous song and dance while WODing, and swears profusely when excited. Libby’s passion for coaching can usually be seen in her teaching of the Elements curriculum. Her alter-ego is a tenured Professor of Biological Anthropology at the University of Missouri, Columbia. She received her Bachelors from the University of California, Berkeley, and her MS and Ph.D. from Washington University, St. Louis. Her research focuses on the skeleton’s response to exercise, and the behavior, growth, and activity of Paleolithic peoples, which she finds dovetails with nutrition and CrossFit in interesting and unexpected ways.

Tyler Lasley coach at CrossFit Fringe

Tyler Lasley

Founder, Certified CrossFit Level 3 Trainer

“CrossFit has been a life-changing experience for me. As an owner of one of the first 500 CrossFit Affiliates in the world I have had the privilege of training in several different boxes, yet always find that CrossFit Fringe, our coaching team, and community stick out as one of the best I’ve ever been to or seen. Their passion has fueled my relentless pursuit of excellence in continuing education, and sharing my knowledge to change lives in Columbia, Missouri. I still owe thanks to those who first introduced me to the pain and pleasure of becoming comfortable being uncomfortable.” Before CrossFit, Tyler Lasley worked with Division 1 athletes at Mizzou in athletic performance and strength and conditioning. He worked with football, volleyball, baseball, swimming, and tennis. Additionally, Tyler programmed and worked with the Superleague Chicago Griffins, the Division 1 St. Louis Bombers, and the Mizzou men’s rugby clubs. He was also in school for Nutrition with an emphasis on Exercise Physiology. His ultimate goal was to complete a Doctorate, but it fell to the side at the MS level because CrossFit Fringe became less of a hobby and more of a career – a unique space that allowed him to house all the areas he loved under one roof: part science, part anecdotal experience, and a little bit of experimentation. Tyler’s athlete roster has included NFL athletes, pro rugby players, powerlifters, weightlifters, Paralympians, weight loss/gain athletes, and of course most notably CrossFit Games athletes; including individuals, teens, teams, and masters.
