Sloppy Joe's

Sloppy Joe's, slop slop sloppy joe's!

Okay, you know we can't resist a good movie reference. Sloppy Joe's are the quintessential family-friendly meal. Everyone loves them.

Our team has always been a fan of classic sloppy joes. That sweet and savory combination and just the crazy messy nature of eating them makes you feel like you're eating something really good. We have a couple of pro tips for making them:

  • Definitely toast your buns. That crispy bread against the sloppy joe's texture is just to die for
  • Don't let the sauce reduce too much -- no one likes a dry sloppy joe mixture
  • Definitely make extra, it freezes wonderfully for up to 4 months!

Healthier Sloppy Joes

Sloppy Joe's  A childhood favorite that is still a 10/10 family pleaser! Grab a few easy ingredients and made these sweet and savory sandwiches and then freeze some for later!

Ingredients

1 tablespoon extra virgin olive oil
1 pound lean ground beef
cup finely chopped carrots
cup finely chopped celery
cup finely chopped green bell pepper
cup finely chopped red bell pepper
cup finely chopped yellow or red onion
teaspoon salt
2 cloves garlic, minced
2 tablespoons brown sugar
3 teaspoons red wine vinegar or apple cider vinegar
1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
1  cups tomato sauce
cup ketchup
cup low sodium beef broth (preferred) or water
Buns - or baked sweet potatoes if you want to get really fancy!

Instructions

  1. In a large skillet, saute ground beef in olive oil over medium heat, breaking it up as it cooks. Once the meat has browned, add all the veggies and some salt.
  2. Cook until the vegetables are beginning to soften, ~6 minutes.
  3. Add the minced garlic and cook for another minute or two, stirring occasionally.
  4. Now for the magic - add brown sugar, vinegar, Worcestershire sauce, tomato sauce, ketchup, and beef broth to mixture. Stir well. Simmer over medium-low heatstirring occasionally, for ~20 minutes. If the sauce gets too thick you can add a splash of beef broth and/or water. If the sauce is too thin, just simmer longer to reduce and thicken.
  5. Now enjoy!
